Took me 4 hours to figure out a nest jam last Tuesday in Akron
Got called to a house near Akron last Tuesday for what sounded like a simple sweep. Turns out a starling had built a nest right at the smoke shelf and it was packed so tight my standard 8 inch brush just bounced off it. I ended up going up and down the flue six times with a smaller brush and a bent rod before it finally broke loose. Worst part was the homeowner kept asking if I was almost done every 20 minutes. Any of you got a trick for stubborn nests that won't budge, or do you just keep poking at it like I did?
Just yank the whole thing out with a shop vac, way faster than poking at it. Suck it from the top while you work a rod up from the bottom, the vacuum does most of the pulling. Bird nests are basically mud and twigs, so once you break the outer shell the vac grabs the rest. Beat a four hour job down to like 30 minutes that way. Homeowners hovering is the real battle, tell them you need the room quiet to hear the flue and they usually leave you alone lol.
