Tried using a leaf blower to clear a chimney in a pinch last Tuesday, got a face full of soot and a lesson.

My uncle tried to blow out a pilot light with compressed air once. It just spread a greasy film over everything in his garage. Some jobs really do need the right tools.

Remember reading about how soot is basically just unburned carbon. Makes you wonder if you accidentally invented a new way to apply grill marks, @aaron_adams. Seriously though, that stuff is nasty to breathe in, way worse than just getting dirty. I bet the real lesson is that any tool that pushes air around is just going to move the problem to a new spot, not solve it. You need something that actually traps the soot on the way out.

Feel that, man. Did something similar once trying to vacuum out a fireplace with a shop vac. Forgot the filter was already full, ended up coating my entire living room in a fine black dust. Took two days to clean it all up. You never make that mistake twice, lol. Hope you got the soot out of your eyebrows.

Why not just let the soot add character, @the_paul?
