Why does nobody talk about the old brick flues in the historic district of Savannah?

I was working on a 1920s home there last week and the mortar joints were so worn that my brush was catching on the actual brick edges, not just the creosote.

Used to think they were just old and ugly. Seeing that worn mortar up close changed my mind, they're actually pretty cool.

Hold on, you seriously like the mortar? That crumbly, messy stuff? I always thought it was the part that made the whole thing look broken down.
