Appreciation post: The year the river near my town stopped freezing over
I grew up skating on the Mill River every winter, but around 2015, it just stopped getting thick enough to be safe. That was the moment it clicked for me that this wasn't just a weird warm spell. What's a local change in your area that made the problem feel real?

Honestly, my local pond still freezes solid most winters (we just skated last week).

@the_thomas, that's actually really interesting because my family pond is hit or miss here in the northeast. @sagecooper, is your quarry area still getting those drips or did it completely stop? I'm wondering if it's a slow change like you said or if it's just the winter being weird. We used to skate on our pond every year as a kid, but now it only freezes thick enough maybe every other winter. It's scary to think about that drip getting worse over time because once it's gone, it's gone for good. Do you think that quarry spot could ever freeze solid again or is that a thing of the past?

That bit about the river not freezing hit me. We used to have these massive icicles form on the cliffs by the old quarry every January. For the last five years, they just drip. It's like a slow leak you can't fix.
