Rant: My compost bin drew rats and set back my green goals
I noticed more people in my area trying to compost at home. My own bin became a rodent problem after I tossed in the wrong food waste. It was a big hassle to clear out and start over. This mistake showed me that even simple eco steps can go sideways. We need to share tips to avoid such setbacks.

Wait, you threw food waste in without knowing the rules? That's like the number one thing they warn you about! No wonder you got rats, they'll smell that from a mile away. Gotta research before you start these things.

@avery861, saying it's the number one warning is overkill lol. Plenty of people toss food waste in compost without issues. My neighbor never read any rules and his pile is fine, he just turns it a lot. Some methods need food scraps to work right. Learning by doing can be better than stressing over every rule. Plus, rats aren't always a given if you manage the pile well.

Composting really needs food scraps to work well, in my experience. I always put kitchen waste in mine, but I make sure to cover it with leaves or paper. Turning the pile often helps a lot, just like your neighbor does. It's more about managing it well than worrying too much about warnings.

Read an article that said food waste is fine if you bury it deep in the middle of a hot pile. The problem is when scraps sit on top or the pile stays cool. My cousin had a rat issue because she just dumped her scraps on the heap. Now she mixes them in with browns and turns it, no problems since. It really comes down to method, not just the food itself.
