Read something wild about old refrigerators and power use

I was looking up energy star stuff and found out a fridge from the 80s can use over 1,000 kWh a year... a new efficient one uses like 400. That's a huge drop. Anyone else replaced an old appliance and seen a real change in their bill?

My grandma's old fridge was basically a power meter on fast forward. You could hear the compressor kick on from two rooms away, like a small plane taking off. Replacing that thing felt like unplugging a hidden bitcoin mining rig. The next bill was so low I thought the power company had made a mistake. Turns out I was just paying to keep milk cold in a metal box from the Reagan era.

My uncle had a freezer from the 70s that sounded like a cement mixer full of rocks. The power company actually sent someone to check the meter because his usage was so high. He called it his "personal contribution to the local grid." The new one he got is so quiet it's almost creepy.

So how much did that old beast actually cost you each month?
