That farmers market in Austin last spring made me rethink my whole grocery routine
Watched a vendor toss out a whole crate of slightly bruised peaches because nobody would buy them, and I realized how much food waste happens right in front of us every weekend.

Start asking vendors if you can buy their "seconds" for cheap. Most of them are happy to sell the ugly stuff at half price if you just ASK. I get bags of sad tomatoes and weird shaped peppers for basically nothing every week now.

Do you find they start giving you the better looking stuff too after a while, or do they keep you in the ugly pile permanently?

Yeah it does take time but they do start giving you less of the ugly stuff once they know you. I just kept it casual and friendly with my farmer at the market, mentioned I use everything for cooking and canning anyway. After maybe a month or two he started setting aside the nicer stuff for me unprompted. The weird shaped carrots and bent cucumbers still show up but now it's mixed in with the good ones. I think they just need to trust that you're not gonna show up once and complain.
