Found a coolant recipe that cut our tool wear in half...
Three weeks ago at the shop outside Cleveland, I swapped our generic coolant mix for a 7 percent concentration of this semi-synthetic stuff my buddy recommended. We run a lot of 4140 steel on a Haas VF-2, and I was burning through end mills every 40 parts on average. After the switch, I'm getting about 80 parts per tool before the edges start going. The coolant costs a bit more per gallon, like $22 instead of $15, but the tool savings are way bigger. Has anyone else played around with different coolant ratios for tougher steels?

That "7 percent concentration" part jumped out at me. Your tool savings sound great but I'd be worried about the coolant life getting shorter with that mix.

That "coolant life getting shorter" thing is funny because I ran a 10 percent mix once and the stuff grew this weird pink fungus in the tank. Looked like something from a sci-fi movie.
