TIL you can hear a bad toolpath before you ever see it
Last Tuesday I was running a batch of 60 aluminum brackets on the old Haas at the shop in Reno, and about 20 parts in I heard this little chirp on every pass that I'd been ignoring for an hour. Turned out my feed was way too hot for the cutter and I'd already smoked two end mills before I finally stopped and checked it. I backed the feed down 15 percent, re-ran the program, and the sound cleaned up right away, but I still scrapped 6 parts because of the finish. Now I stop the spindle the second anything sounds off instead of telling myself it'll ride out. How do you guys catch stuff like this, listening or watching your load meter?
Ran a similar batch of 60 on a VF2 in Sparks and my rule is ears first, meter second. The load meter lags a bit, that chirp shows up before the needle even moves. If your Haas has the spindle load graph on screen, watch the spikes and listen at the same time, they usually match up right when the cut starts going bad.
