Why does nobody talk about deburring before inspection? A guy at the Tulsa shop set me straight
I used to run my parts straight to the CMM after the last pass, figured a quick file on the edges was wasted time. Then last Tuesday a guy named Ray watched me drop a freshly milled bracket on the granite and just said 'you're measuring the burr, not the part.' He grabbed my file, hit the edges for maybe 40 seconds, and the profile came back 0.003 under instead of dead on. We had been chasing that offset for two weeks on a 200 piece run. Now I want to know, do you guys deburr before first article or just before shipping?
A 0.003 shift from 40 seconds of filing lines up with what I've seen too, and it gets worse on aluminum because the burr folds over instead of breaking off clean. On a 200 piece run you probably had a mix, some edges rolling one way, some the other, so the average hid the real error and looked like a steady offset. Deburr before first article, always, and note which tool path made the burr so you know what to expect on the next run.
