My uncle said to start with C++ because it teaches discipline, but it almost made me quit.

He told me that back in 2010, saying 'you'll thank me later'. I spent six months fighting with pointers and memory management before I switched to Python and actually started building things. Anyone else get advice that sounded wise but just didn't fit how you learn?

Some advice just doesn't age well...

Totally get what you mean about advice not aging well. My friend's dad always told him to "keep your head down and work hard, and you'll be rewarded." He did that for a decade at his company, never asking for anything, and got passed over for promotions every time. It was like watching someone follow a map to a place that doesn't exist anymore. It actually reminds me of what @john_fisher said about old rules setting you up for a fall. Makes you wonder what other stuff we're still carrying around that just doesn't work now.

Oh, I hear you on that one. It can be really tough when you realize the old rules you were given just don't fit the world anymore. I've held onto bits of advice for years, only to find they set me up for a fall. It leaves you feeling a bit lost, having to figure things out from scratch.
