My local shop's midnight release was a total zoo, now I go the morning after
Last month I hit the midnight release for a big superhero event at my shop in Portland and it was packed wall to wall. People were grabbing stacks of variants like they were on sale, and the guy next to me kept yelling about spoilers from the last issue. I waited 45 minutes just to pay, and by the time I got home I was too tired to even read the thing. This time around I waited until 9 AM the next day, walked in, no line, and they still had every cover I wanted. Plus the owner had time to chat about the storyline and even tossed in a free back issue from the 90s. Has anyone else switched to skipping midnight events for the calm morning pickup? I feel like I'm missing the fun of the crowd, but honestly the sleep is better.
The morning after is the secret move for sure. You get the whole pick of the litter without the elbow fights, and stores usually restock the popular covers overnight anyway. Plus chatting with the owner beats standing next to some dude who smells like energy drinks and spoils the ending. Last big drop I walked in at 10, grabbed the last foil variant on the shelf, and the guy at the counter threw in a free bag and board. Now I just check the store’s Instagram before bed to see what’s left, so I can plan my coffee run. Do you ever hit up smaller shops the next day for leftover exclusives that didn’t sell?
