My longbox labeling system fell apart after a comic shop guy told me to try something else

I had my longboxes organized by publisher and then alphabetical for years. A guy at my local shop named Dave said I was doing it all wrong and should sort by story arcs and release dates instead. I tried his method for about 2 months and it was a total mess. I could never find a specific issue without looking up the arc first and it drove me crazy. I finally switched back to my old system last week and I feel like I can breathe again. Has anyone else gotten advice from a shop employee that turned out to be terrible for how you collect?

Wait, so Dave actually got you to try his system for 2 months before you switched back? I used to think sorting by story arcs was the smart way to go because it feels more like a continuous story, but now I see how it totally breaks down when you just want to grab a specific issue. I wasted a whole afternoon once hunting for a random X-Men annual that was buried in some event arc box. Did you at least find some cool stuff you forgot you had while you were reorganizing everything?

lol @john_fisher's pain is real. I read a blog post once that said your sorting system should match how you actually read, not how the store does it. Dave's advice was probably good for him, but terrible for anyone who just wants to grab a random issue.
