Was skeptical of variant covers for 15 years, one artist flipped me

I always thought variant covers were marketing scams for whales. Refused to buy them since 2011 or so. Then this March at my local shop in Austin, they had a Peach Momoko variant for a book I already liked. I laughed at it. Owner said just look at the line work for a minute. I did. Realized she actually puts story details in the art that connect to the issue, not just a pretty pinup. Bought that one for $8. Now I own 3 of her variants. Do you ever buy variants for the art itself, or is it purely about resale value for you?

I mean, yeah, the resale crowd ruined it for a lot of us. But that point about story details actually hitting the art is real. Momoko's stuff made me slow down and read the cover twice. Maybe it's just me, but I'll pay extra if the art makes me look at the issue different. Still skip most variants though, most are just pretty noise.
