Went on a dive in the old quarry near Scranton and found a whole fleet of shopping carts
I mean, I've pulled up some weird stuff before (anchors, beer bottles, once a full toolbox), but this was like 12 carts stacked in a pile at about 30 feet. The weird part is they were all locked together with chains, and one had a license plate from 1987 zip-tied to it. Has anyone else run into a grocery store's secret dumping spot on a job, or was this just my lucky day?

That "license plate from 1987 zip-tied to it" part is what's got me stuck. Carts rust out in a few years in fresh water, so someone had to be maintaining that pile for decades. You check if the plate was registered to a local store or maybe a person? Sounds less like a random dump and more like someone's weird collection or a grudge against a specific grocery chain. Also, did the chains look new or old? That tells you if it was a one-time thing or something still getting added to.

That bit about the chains being new or old reminded me of a friend who pulled a cart out of a creek behind his house, and the lock had a date stamped from the year he bought his first car. He ran the plate number and it came back to a store that closed in 1999, but the chain on it was fresh enough that it still had that greasy new metal smell. @stella_taylor is right, that plate is the real clue, I bet someone's been adding to that pile for years, maybe even generations.
