Just found out how many old hard drives get tossed without a proper wipe

I was reading a report from a tech recycling place in Austin. They said over 40% of the hard drives they get still have personal data on them. Pictures, tax files, old emails, the whole thing. I always knew people skipped wiping drives, but seeing that number really got me. It's not just home users either, they get drives from small businesses too. Makes me think about all the times I've seen a client just toss an old PC in the trash. Now I'm making it a point to ask every single customer if they want me to wipe the drive before I recycle anything for them. Has anyone else started adding a data wipe as a standard part of their service?

Honestly just run DBAN on every drive before it leaves your shop.

Just follow @bettym11's lead and wipe every drive, no questions asked.

That Austin report is wild, 40% is a huge number of people just giving away their digital lives. I bet some of those business drives have way worse than old vacation photos on them. @bettym11 has the right idea, DBAN should just be the default like putting on your seatbelt. It's crazy we even have to ask, but I guess some folks just don't think about where that old laptop ends up. What's the weirdest thing you've ever found on a drive you were supposed to recycle?
