Bid low and win big? My $0 labor quote landed a $4k bathroom job
Everyone in this group says never work for free, but I tried the opposite last month in Dayton. I gave a homeowner a line item with $0 for labor on just the demo phase, betting I'd make it back on materials and the finish work. They picked me over three higher bids and I cleared $4,200 total after expenses. Anyone else ever front-load a loss to win the contract and come out ahead?
That old trick can work, but my experience says it only pays off if you're certain the client will actually spring for the extras. I did something similar on a small remodel once and it worked out, but you're walking a fine line between smart bidding and digging your own hole.
