Appreciation post: my Saturday client at Hair by Design

Last Saturday I had a woman in her 60s come in for a root touch-up, and she told me she'd been coloring her own hair for 2 years because she thought salons were too expensive. She finally came in after her daughter insisted, and she said she felt like a new person. It hit me different because she paid $65 for a service that took 45 minutes and said it was the best money she'd spent all year. Made me wonder how many people out there are avoiding professional help just because they assume pricing is out of reach?

Is it really that deep though? I mean, yeah it's nice she felt good but $65 for 45 minutes of work is pretty steep when you think about it. Plenty of people do fine with box dye if they're careful and know what they're doing (I've seen some real disasters though, not gonna lie). And her daughter basically had to drag her in, which means she wasn't exactly dying to spend that money. It's one client on one Saturday, not exactly a revolution in salon economics or whatever.

Gotta disagree with you here man. $65 for 45 minutes of skilled work is actually on the cheaper side for a salon color service, especially if the stylist is using professional products and knows what they're doing. Box dye might work fine if you're just doing your roots a shade darker, but getting an actual good result that doesn't look brassy or patchy takes training and experience. And yeah, the daughter had to drag her in, but so what? The mom ended up loving it, which is the whole point. Not every service has to be some grand statement, sometimes it's just about making one person feel good about themselves on a random Saturday.
