My old instructor swore by sectioning in 4s, but I tried 8 sections for a 2 hour vivid color and the difference was night and day
She taught me that 'more sections just means more lines to blend out,' but after 3 months of fighting patchy results on long hair in Seattle, I split the crown into 8 tiny quadrants on a client yesterday and the saturation was so even she tipped me $40, so which is it, is 4 sections really the industry standard or were we just being lazy?

That 40 dollar tip might be about her hair type more than your section count, sea salt air does weird things to color.

Honestly, I never even thought about the salt air angle. I used to think tips were just about how many sections someone did or how long they took, you know, like a math thing. But you're right, if her color turned brassy or patchy from the beach air, that's a whole different fix. That would take extra toners and glaze work, which explains the 40 bucks way better than a count. I'm guilty of assuming it was just me being generous or them being cheap, but this puts it in a whole new light. Guess I need to pay more attention to what's actually going on with the hair, not just the clock.
