After the jackknife in Port Newark, I stopped trusting my gut on load charts
When that 40-ton transformer shifted on the flatbed in Port Newark last March, my spotter screamed at me to drop the hook, and now I run every lift through the chart twice even if the math feels obvious, because that close call on Pier 4 taught me that one number off can turn a routine pick into a nightmare, has anyone else had a rigging fail that made them question their own experience?

You ever have that moment where the color just drains outta everything and you hear your own heartbeat? Yeah, same thing happened to me on a barge off Galveston. Now I triple check the charts even for stupid small stuff, and honestly, it’s made me slower but way more careful.

Ha! Yeah, @jana881, that heartbeat thing is like your body hitting the panic button for free. I once had that exact moment staring at a fuel gauge that was lying to me, and now I treat every little check like it's gonna save my life. Sure, I look like a paranoid weirdo double and triple counting stuff, but I'd rather be slow and boring than famous in a Coast Guard report. Funny how one bad second can turn you into the most careful person on the water.
