Old-school mental math versus crane computers: which side are you on?

I learned to guess weights and reach in my head from a veteran operator. Some guys now just follow the screen and never think about it. Should we keep doing the head work or let the machine handle it?

Sure, trust the computer until it freezes and you're left figuring out a ton of steel in your head. That veteran wisdom isn't just nostalgia, it's a safety net for when the tech inevitably fails. Guys who only follow the screen are one power outage away from a real problem on site. Doing the math yourself keeps your mind sharp and actually makes you better at judging lifts. We can use the tech as a tool, but never let it replace basic human skill and instinct. Losing that head work is like forgetting how to read a map just because your phone has GPS.

Used to trust screens until one crashed mid-lift.

Hell yeah! Karen nailed it. I learned from an old timer too (back when I was starting out) and that mental math has saved my butt more than once when the fancy gear glitched. Like one time, the display froze up and I had to eyeball the load based on past lifts. You gotta keep that skill sharp, or you're just a button-pusher waiting for a failure.

Wyatt135's story about the frozen display is exactly why I keep practicing. What happens when the power goes out and you've got a load hanging?
