Spent $40 on a writing prompt generator book and it was all recycled junk

I bought this book called '5000 Creative Writing Prompts' off Amazon for 40 bucks. Every single prompt was basically 'write about a person who finds a mysterious object' just reworded 5000 times. I flipped through the whole thing in ten minutes and got nothing useful. Has anyone else tried those prompt books and actually got good ideas from them?

I bought the same one last month and felt ripped off too. I used to think prompt books were worth the money for getting the creative juices flowing but that one was just a money grab. The only good writing advice I got was online for free after that.

Totally agree, the free stuff online is usually way better. Speaking of ripoffs, reminds me of when I bought a supposedly foolproof guide to fixing my old truck's transmission. Paid forty bucks for a PDF that just said "get a manual and some tools." No actual steps, just a vague pep talk. Ended up watching a three hour video on YouTube by some guy in his driveway who actually showed me how to drop the pan and replace the filter. Saved me a couple hundred bucks at a shop. These book publishers are just cashing in on people who don't know where to look for the real info. It's a shame because a well written book with actual substance would be worth the money.
