Started seeing credit score drops from old paid collections reopening
Back in 2013, once a collection was paid off, it just sat there and aged off after 7 years. Now I'm seeing some of the big credit bureaus treat old paid collections as if they're fresh negative items after a resold debt or a date change. Had a $340 medical bill from 2016 pop up on my Experian report in 2020 like it was brand new after some third party bought it. My score dropped 50 points overnight and I had to fight for 6 months with dispute letters to get it removed. Has anyone else had a old settled account come back from the dead on their report? What did you use to get it fixed?

Oh man, that's infuriating. I had a similar thing happen with an old Sprint bill from 2015 that suddenly showed up on TransUnion last year and I just ignored it for a few months before it finally fell off on its own.

Honestly I've been noticing that with a lot of stuff lately. Like my old gym membership from 2017 somehow popped up on my credit report last month and it's just random outdated bills nobody chased me for. Feels like these companies are digging through old files hoping you'll just pay without question.

Feels like these companies are digging through old files" you're so right, they're banking on us just paying without checking the dates.
