I finally changed how I share my location after my sister called me out
My sister sent me a text last month after I shared a Google Maps link to my shop. She said it showed the exact path I took from my house to the parking lot, including a five minute stop at a gas station. I honestly never realized that feature was on by default. It made me think about how much extra info we give away without meaning to. I went in and turned off location history for that account completely. Now I only drop a pin with no route attached, or I just tell people the cross streets. Has anyone else had a family member point out something creepy about your data sharing habits?

Honestly I like knowing my route history it's useful for tracking miles.

The privacy angle always gets overlooked with these tracking features. Route history is basically a map of your habits, your work schedule, and even where you live. If that data leaks or gets sold to insurance companies, they could raise your rates just for driving through a certain part of town. It's one thing to track miles on your own spreadsheet, but another when an app knows every gas station you stop at and every detour you take during rush hour. Some people even have jobs where their route history could put them at risk if someone got ahold of it. Just something to keep in mind before you get too comfortable with it all being saved up in the cloud.

the_terry said "if that data leaks or gets sold to insurance companies" but tbh that feels a little paranoid. Like yeah it's smart to be careful but most of us aren't that interesting to track. Just turn off the stuff you don't want and move on.
