Honestly, for years I never even looked at my bank's privacy settings, figured it was just part of using a checking account. Then last year a friend showed me a marketing email from Chase that mentioned a specific coffee shop I visited three times in a week and I felt totally creeped out. I switched to a credit union in Portland that explicitly says they don't share spending habits with third parties, and now I actually read the fine print on every app I install.
