My date's profile pic was a 10-year-old photo of his brother

I matched with this guy on Hinge last month, his pictures looked great, super outdoorsy. We met at a coffee shop and I didn't recognize him at all. After an awkward minute, he admitted the main photo was actually his older brother from like 2013, because he 'had better lighting'. I mean, idk, maybe it's just me but that's a whole new level of catfishing. Has anyone else shown up to a date and the person was literally not the one in the pictures?

That's not catfishing, that's just lying.

Exactly. Catfishing is a specific kind of lie. It's building a whole fake life online to trick someone emotionally. Regular lying is just saying you're six feet tall when you're not. Both are wrong, but the scale is totally different. One messes with basic trust, the other is full on psychological manipulation. People throw the word around too much now.

Wow, that's brutal. I showed up to a date once and the guy had used a photo from before he shaved his head and lost like 60 pounds. I was looking for a bald guy and greeting a guy with a full head of hair. Felt like a secret agent at a bad meet-up. @gavin365 has a point about the scale being different, but showing up as a completely different person is just a special kind of awkward. You're sitting there trying to be polite while your brain is screaming "who is this?".
