Grandpa showed me a deepfake of himself and I finally got it
My grandpa sent me a video on Facebook last week where he looked like he was 30 years old again, talking about fishing. I knew it was fake because he's 82, but it creeped me out how real his voice and face looked. He told me he made it with a free app on his phone in 10 minutes. That's when it clicked that anyone can do this now, not just experts. I realized I can't trust any video I see online anymore, even if it's from family. Have any of you seen a deepfake that really fooled you before you knew it was fake?

My 16 year old nephew showed me an AI video of our family dog singing country music last month and I laughed until I cried. But then I started thinking about all those political ads and news clips floating around, how easy it is to make someone look like they said something they never did. It feels like we're all learning a whole new way of being skeptical about everything we see, doesn't it?

Just start recording everything on your phone with timestamps, @murray.cora, it's the only way to prove what's real now.

The thing about timestamps is they're actually pretty easy to fake too, not to be that person. My cousin who works in video editing showed me how you can just change the file metadata or even record a screen capture with a fake clock in the corner. It's honestly wild how deep this rabbit hole goes, I keep thinking about how my grandma used to say "seeing is believing" and now that's basically dead. That dog video sounds hilarious though, I wish my family was that creative instead of just sharing conspiracy theories.
