That guy who laughed at me for buying a domain name back in 2012? He sure changed his tune.

I registered detroitcharities.org for 12 bucks and some old timer at a networking breakfast told me I was wasting money on "internet real estate." Now that same domain is drawing in donation traffic and I bet he wishes he grabbed it instead. Anybody else have a boomer business owner give you terrible tech advice back in the day?

Well I gotta say, I sorta see where that old timer was coming from... back then domains felt like a gamble and a lot of people lost money on wild ideas. But you definitely proved him wrong with that one.

You know what, I was actually on the fence about domain investing back then too. My buddy @marydavis talked me into looking at a few and I thought he was wasting his money. Then I saw him flip a three letter .com for more than my car was worth and I had to change my tune. That old timer was right to be skeptical but sometimes the wild ideas actually pan out if you pick the right ones.

Building on what marydavis said, I think a lot of those old school guys just didn't understand how the internet was going to eat everything. They saw domain names as a fad, like those fake internet money things or Beanie Babies. But the truth is, owning a good domain is like owning a piece of Main Street in a town that's still being built. You got in early, you grabbed a spot that actually matters, and now everyone has to come through your door if they want to get to that charity. That old timer probably still thinks you can get by with a yellow pages ad and a handshake.
