Overheard a pro at a convention say something about color theory that stopped me cold

I was at a digital art meetup in Portland last Saturday and this guy who does concept art for games was talking to someone about how he never uses pure black or pure white. That got me thinking about my own pieces and how flat they look sometimes. I went home and tried replacing my blacks with dark blues and my whites with warm yellows and it made a huge difference in depth. Has anyone else found a trick like that that just clicked suddenly after hearing it from someone else?

Yeah, that dark blue instead of black trick hit me the same way when I first heard it - suddenly shadows had life instead of just being a void. Glad it clicked for you too.

Start painting shadows with deep indigo instead of pure black. It makes the whole piece feel alive and dimensional without trying too hard. Really changed how my stuff looked for the better.
