TIL my over-reliance on layer effects ruined a commission piece

Lots of artists online push for using every layer effect to make digital art stand out, but I think that's wrong. I took on a client job for a character portrait and loaded it with glows, drop shadows, and blending modes. The result was a cluttered mess where the face got lost in all the flashy stuff. The client pointed out it looked overdone and not like the clean style they wanted. I had to redo the whole thing from scratch, wasting hours of work. Now I stick to basic layers and keep effects minimal for a stronger image. It was a hard lesson that more isn't always better in digital art. I'm firm on this: simplicity often beats complexity in showcases.

That "simplicity beats complexity" point hits hard because fancy tools sell the dream of an easy fix. @avery861 getting cartoonish with filters shows how we all get tricked sometimes. It actually takes more skill to hold back and make something clean.

Oh man, I went crazy with filters on a photo once and made it look like a bad cartoon! It really taught me to chill out with the extra stuff.

But those glows and shadows can really make a piece shine if used right. A lot of popular art online is full of effects because it looks lively and cool. Calling it a clutter misses how much skill it takes to balance all that stuff.

Remember that time I added a lens flare to a portrait and made the guy look like he was having a solar flare hit him in the eyeball? I got so into the glow and gradient map on a fantasy piece once that the elf just looked like a neon sign. You chase that shiny look and suddenly your whole painting is just noise. It's like putting every spice in the cabinet into one soup, you can't taste anything anymore. Had to scrap a whole background because my own glow effects drowned out the character.
