Can we talk about the moment you realized your 'home base' was holding you back?

I was in a cafe in Medellin last year, looking at a $1200 flight back to my 'cheap' apartment in Austin. I'd kept it for two years, paying rent even when I was gone, just for the idea of a home. The math hit me: I'd spent over $28k on a place I barely used. That flight was the last one. I sold or stored everything within a month. Has anyone else had a specific expense that finally made you cut the cord completely?

That "math hit me" moment is so real. Mine was the car. I was paying $450 a month for insurance and payments on a car that just sat at the airport while I was away for work. Seeing that charge hit my account for a car I hadn't driven in six weeks was the last straw. Sold it, and now I just rent when I'm actually home.

Renting can still get pricey if you're home a lot. The math only works if your trips are long and frequent. It's a good move for your specific situation though.

Man, that's a huge number to see laid out like that. I had a similar wake-up call with my car payment, just like @nathan100 said. Letting go of that fixed cost was the best move for actually funding more trips.
