Had to choose between a lawyer and a rep for my disability appeal
I was deciding between hiring a disability lawyer for $6,000 or going with a free advocate from a local nonprofit on Elm Street. I picked the advocate because I couldn't afford the retainer, and she helped me organize my medical records way better than I expected. Did anyone else have luck with a free rep instead of paying for a lawyer?

It mirrors a pattern I see all the time where people assume paid services are better just because they cost more. Groceries from the fancy store aren't always fresher than the discount market down the block. My brother spent $200 on a mechanic for a diagnosis only to have the guy tell him it was a loose gas cap. Meanwhile a free YouTube video fixed it in two minutes. The lawyer probably would have given you the same advice your advocate gave you, just with a bill attached. Good on you for trusting the free route when it made sense.

That is a tough spot to be in. I am sorry you had to make that call. I have heard good things about those nonprofit reps, they really know the system inside and out. Sounds like you made the right choice for your situation, especially since that lawyer fee is so steep.

Yeah, I went the nonprofit route too and they really walked me through everything step by step.
