Saw my neighbor's appeal denial letter from 2016 and compared it to mine from last week...

The whole tone changed from "you didn't prove anything" to "we see you have limits but here's why you still don't qualify" and now I'm wondering if they just softened the language to stop people from appealing as hard.

Hit exactly 180 days on my appeal with zero updates

So I've been waiting on my disability appeal for six months now. I marked the calendar on day 180 and thought something might happen, but nope. Called the SSA office and they said my case is still 'in the processing phase.' Has anyone else hit these weird milestone days and felt like the system just doesn't care about specific numbers we latch onto?

That $50 appeal filing fee I threw away on a lazy lawyer

Hired a lawyer who said he'd handle my disability appeal for a flat fee upfront. Paid him 50 bucks just to file the paperwork. Then he sent me a form with the wrong date of onset by 3 years. I caught it because I checked everything he did. When I asked him to fix it he said it was fine and rushed me off the phone. Spent another two months correcting the mess myself. Turns out he had a record of complaints with the bar association I should have looked up. Wish I had just used the free legal aid clinic downtown. Has anyone else gotten burned by a lawyer who just took the filing fee and did nothing?

Chose a lawyer over doing it myself for my SSDI appeal and it paid off

I was stuck between hiring a disability lawyer or handling my SSDI appeal solo. After 4 months of gathering medical records and getting nowhere, I finally called a local firm in Toledo. They found two reports my doctor forgot to send and fixed a date error that was costing me. My hearing is next month but the pre-hearing review already looks way better. Anyone else have better luck with a lawyer than going it alone?

Got denied for a paper shredder I bought in 2017, took 8 months to fix

So I had this disability appeal where the SSA said I had too much in assets because I bought a $40 paper shredder off Craigslist back in 2017 and they counted it as income. Took me 8 months to get a local lawyer in Dayton to actually look at the receipt and prove it was a used purchase. The judge literally laughed when he saw the shredder was broken too. Anyone else have a wild denial over some tiny purchase that took forever to straighten out?

Found out from a Social Security rep that the average wait time for a hearing decision in my state is now 387 days

I read that statistic on the official SSA office of analytics page while waiting for my reconsideration to clear and it really put my own 14 month wait into perspective, has anyone else noticed the backlog getting worse since 2020?

Warning: spent $400 on a lawyer who didn't even read my file

I paid a lawyer $400 upfront to help with my SSDI appeal and they showed up to the hearing mixing up my case with someone else's. After that I went with a nonprofit rep for free and got approved in 5 months. Has anyone else had a paid lawyer just totally drop the ball?

Why does nobody talk about how hard it is to get a lawyer for a second appeal?

I got denied for my initial claim back in 2021, then got denied again on reconsideration in early 2022. After that I tried calling 8 different disability lawyers in my area of Phoenix and most said they wouldn't even take cases that had already been denied twice. Finally found one who agreed to help but only because I had new medical records from a surgery last August. Has anyone else hit this wall where lawyers won't touch you after a second denial?

Honestly, I was real skeptical about getting a disability lawyer for my SSDI appeal. Figured they'd just take a cut of my back pay and not do much more than I could myself. But after my first hearing got denied in 8 months, I caved and hired one from Allsup in Chicago. Tbh she found three pieces of medical evidence my doctor never sent in, and I won on reconsideration. Has anyone else had the opposite experience where the lawyer did nothing useful?

Thought getting medical records would take a week... it's been 3 months

I'm appealing a denial for my back condition, and I asked my doctor's office in Cleveland for all my records. They said 7-10 business days tops. It's been 12 weeks and I've called them 6 times, still missing the MRI reports from 2022. Has anyone else had this kind of delay hold up their appeal process?

Thought independent medical exams were always biased until my own doctor sat in on one

My own neurologist reviewed the IME report and pointed out 3 factual errors the examiner made about my MRI results, which convinced me some of them are just sloppy rather than malicious, and now I'm wondering if anyone else has had a treating doctor catch mistakes in an IME report?

That $400 medical record review service was a total scam for my SSDI appeal

Paid $400 to MedReview Pros LLC to get my records organized for my disability hearing back in March. They just printed out stuff I already had and charged me extra for 'expedited processing.' Ended up losing my case partly cause their summary left out 3 key doctor visits. Anyone else get burned by one of these review companies?

I hired this guy who promised he'd handle everything, but all he did was submit my existing medical records again with a cover letter. The ALJ basically said 'we already have these' and denied me on the spot six weeks later. Has anyone else had a lawyer just take the money and not actually prepare new evidence?

Heard a judge on the phone say 'just deny it and make them appeal' and it stuck with me

I was sitting in the waiting room at the SSA office in Cleveland last Tuesday, and this woman's phone was on speaker. Some judge or reviewer told her flat out to deny the first claim because most people give up after that. Made me realize the system is designed to wear you down on purpose. Update: Had my disability hearing in Des Moines last week and a lady from the SSA gave me a tip that saved my case

I was waiting in the hallway outside Room 204, super nervous, and this older woman who worked there leaned over and said 'make sure you mention how your condition affects your daily routine, not just your symptoms.' I told them I can't stand long enough to cook a meal or even shower without sitting down. The judge actually wrote that down. Has anyone else gotten a random helpful tip from a stranger during their appeal process?
