Used to ignore software updates until a phishing scam hit my email

I used to click "remind me later" on every Windows update for months. Then last summer I got a fake email that looked like my bank, and my old phone couldn't block it because the security patch was from 2022. A buddy at work told me how hackers exploit those gaps in old versions. Now I let updates install overnight once a week, saved me twice already from sketchy links. Anyone else finally give in and start updating regularly?

Funny how one bad experience is what it takes for people to finally change habits like that. It's part of a bigger thing I see everywhere lately, people putting off small fixes until something big breaks. Like my neighbor never changed his car's oil on time, then blew the engine on a Sunday drive. Or my sister refusing to back up her phone photos until the thing got stolen at the mall. We all think "it won't happen to me" until it does, then suddenly we're the ones preaching updates to everyone else. The tech stuff is just the modern version of that same old story.

River952 gets at something real, but I think the overlooked part is how much our brains just shut down when a fix seems too annoying or small to matter. We are wired to coast until the cost of ignoring something becomes higher than the effort to fix it. That neighbor with the oil change probably knew he was pushing it, but the thought of scheduling an appointment and paying for it just felt like a bigger pain than the risk of the engine dying.
