My neighbor talked me out of buying a $400 solar generator
I was dead set on getting one of those fancy all-in-one solar generators until my neighbor Dave, who's been off grid for 12 years up in Humboldt County, told me to just piece together my own system with a separate panel, charge controller, and battery. He said those combo units are way overpriced and if one part breaks you're stuck replacing the whole thing. I spent about $220 total on a used 100 watt panel, a PWM controller from a local shop, and a deep cycle marine battery. Has anyone else had better luck building their own setup rather than buying the expensive all-in-one stuff?

That 12 year off grid claim from Dave is cool and all, but let's be real, how often does your average person actually need to run sensitive electronics off a jerry-rigged 100 watt panel and a deep cycle battery? I'm just saying, most folks buy these generators for the occasional outage or weekend camping trip, not to power a cabin in the woods for a decade. The convenience of just grabbing a single box and plugging in an AC cord, especially if you're not technically inclined, is worth something. Sure, the DIY route is cheaper upfront, but you're trading that for a system that's heavier, uglier, and harder to move around. I've seen more than one buddy's "budget" setup end up sitting in the garage after the marine battery leaked or the PWM controller gave out on a rainy night. It's just not that serious for 95% of people to be hauling loose batteries and panels around.

Dave lived off grid for 12 years so he probably knows his stuff but lets be real here. You spent $220 on used parts and a basic PWM controller which is fine for a cabin but that battery is gonna need replacing way sooner than a lithium one would. If you need to move that setup around for camping or emergencies the all-in-one boxes are way more convenient even if they cost more.

That "basic PWM controller" is the real weak link, honestly - it's like buying a cheap charger for an expensive phone and wondering why it dies so fast. @roberts.leo is spot on about that battery lifespan being the killer, because a flooded lead acid will crap out just when you need it most (like during a power outage at 2 AM). You could save a bit by going with a used lithium battery instead of new, and pair it with a decent MPPT controller, and suddenly that "budget" setup lasts way longer without being a full-blown all-in-one box.
