Half the people in our prison just need literacy classes, not longer sentences.
I volunteered at the county lockup for 2 years. Watched a guy named Daryl go from signing his name with an X to reading a whole chapter book in 6 months. Nobody talks about how many crimes start with can't read job applications.

@logan525 exactly right, I saw Daryl light up with a simple graphic novel first.

right book first" is key but I think we skip over how the format itself matters. A heavy novel with tiny font can scare someone off before they even start, while a graphic novel tricks them into reading. Maybe the real trick is finding the right format, not just the right title.
