The guy who told me to use shoelaces instead of zip ties for my sign actually had a point
At the climate rally last month in Portland, my cardboard sign held up through three hours of rain and a gust of wind that snapped two other signs' zip ties in half, so I guess I owe that random stranger at the coffee shop a thank you for the tip.

The shoelace trick works because the cotton grips better when it gets wet, plus you can tie a proper knot that won't slip under pressure. I started doing this after my zip ties kept snapping in the cold weather at another protest. Your mileage may vary on the knot type but I've had the best luck with a double fisherman's knot.

Oh man, that's rough about the zip ties snapping in the cold. Solidarity

You ever have a knot get so tight from the pressure that you couldn't even get your fingers in to untie it afterwards? I'm wondering if that double fisherman's holds up better than a regular square knot when you're trying to bail out fast. Seems like the tradeoff might be security vs. speed, especially with wet cotton.
