Tried to hide a camera in a smoke detector in my kitchen, my neighbor spotted it in 2 minutes

Last Tuesday I put a small lens inside a fake smoke detector from Amazon, $15 part. My neighbor came over to borrow sugar and looked right at it. He said 'is that a camera or are you just really worried about burns?' I didn't even know what to say. Has anyone had luck with a different household item that doesn't look so obvious?

Wait, did your neighbor seriously come over for sugar and out of all the things to notice, it was a camera in a smoke detector? That's either the worst spy gear luck I've ever heard or your neighbor used to work for the CIA. Maybe try a fake plant or a clock radio instead, something people don't stare at when they're looking for a box of sugar. Or just stick a camera inside a cereal box on the counter, nobody ever suspects the Lucky Charms.

Oh, now hold on a minute. I gotta disagree with you there. A cereal box on the counter is the first thing I'd toss out if I was cleaning the kitchen, and it'd look real suspicious sitting there untouched for weeks. At least a smoke detector blends into the ceiling and nobody ever looks at it twice in normal life. Your neighbor noticing it is just bad luck, not bad placement. I think the real problem is having people over who borrow sugar in the first place. That's how you get caught no matter where you hide the camera.

@logan525 Honestly yeah, maybe the real problem is having neighbors who borrow sugar and also happen to have hawk eyes. I'd probably just stick it in a fake plant at this point, my own kitchen decor is so boring nobody would notice a sneeze.
