TIL my sibling and I clash over how to begin drafting projects
Growing up, my dad was a drafter and always began with pencil and paper. He says it helps you think before going digital. But my sister, in engineering, prefers to work directly in CAD for speed and accuracy. When we planned our garage expansion, we argued a lot. I spent days sketching layouts, while she drafted a 3D model quickly. Her model caught a load bearing wall issue I missed, but my sketches had better space flow. Now I'm confused between old and new ways. What's your view, drafters? Do you start with sketches or move right to software?

Ever try to sketch on a napkin and then scan it into CAD? That's my weird middle ground. Paper feels free, but the software catches the hard stuff.

Heard a teacher say sketching first helps you see the big picture. @amy_craig28's idea about a tablet is smart for blending both. I still like paper for quick ideas though.

Wait, what? Did she actually compare it to a typewriter? That's the most outdated thing I've heard all week.

Sounds like your dad's method is the drafting version of using a typewriter in 2024. Maybe meet in the middle with a tablet and stylus?
