I think being friendly with locals is better than sticking to the crew's silent rule

Our dredge project was right by a small town last fall. Most guys say to keep your head down and don't talk to anyone who moans. I went over and had a quick word with a couple of folks at the fence line. Told them about the work hours and why we were there. Now they give a nod instead of calling the office, and the job runs smoother.

Believed in the silent rule for ages (honestly, it seemed easier). Seeing how your quick talk turned things around changed my mind. A little friendliness really does smooth out the job.

Yeah, that silent rule is a trap. A 30 second chat last week saved me an hour of paperwork. People just want to feel seen.

Wait, just talking to them actually worked?

Not always worth the risk, green.val.
