Just realized my cutterhead teeth were dull 50 hours before I changed them

I started tracking wear rate per cubic yard about 6 months ago on a project near Baton Rouge. Never did it before, just went by feel. Turns out I was losing about 15% efficiency after 450 yards and didn't even notice. The numbers were plain as day on a spreadsheet I threw together. Anyone else track this stuff or just wing it like I used to?

Whoa that's a good point about tracking per cubic yard! I heard a guy talk at a conference once about how he did that with his cutterhead and found out his whole system was set wrong. He said they were running too much speed for the material and wearing out teeth way faster than they should have. Took him months to figure it out just from the numbers. I bet you're onto something with that spreadsheet idea. Makes me wonder what else we're missing by not writing stuff down.

Tracking per cubic yard is the ONLY metric that actually matters for cutterhead cost analysis. Most guys just track total hours and wonder why their numbers don't add up. You're ABSOLUTELY right that we're missing a ton of stuff by not writing it down.

Lol that story reminds me of a buddy who tracked his teeth wear per yard for like 6 months and realized his ground engagement was totally off. He was basically grinding the teeth instead of cutting with them. Changed his setup and doubled his life overnight basically.
