Talking to a retired operator in Mobile changed how I see bucket maintenance

He told me he never waited for a full bucket rebuild, just swapped a single worn tooth every Monday morning for 40 years. Said it saved him three days of downtime a year. Who else does small fixes like that instead of waiting for a big failure?

Mark's got a point about missing hidden wear... but you can do both. Just make that Monday tooth check part of a bigger walk-around to spot other problems. That way you get the small win without the big surprise later.

But that weekly habit forces you to look at the whole bucket, doesn't it? When you're in there swapping that one tooth, you're right there to see if the adapter is loose or a weld looks funny. It's like what jamieb80 said, it becomes part of a bigger check. Waiting for a full rebuild means you only see those hidden problems on a set schedule, but wear doesn't happen on a calendar. Catching a small crack early because you were in there on a Monday seems way better than finding a huge break later.

That sounds like a great way to miss bigger problems. Focusing on one small part every week means you might not see the wear happening on the bucket's floor or side cutters. A full inspection during a planned rebuild finds those hidden issues. Letting them go could cause a much bigger, more expensive break later on. The three days saved might just turn into three weeks of bigger repairs down the line.
