Update: My brother-in-law, who runs a small excavating crew, said our work is just 'wet digging'

We were having a beer after he helped me pull a stuck pump on the old Ellicott 370... He said it with a shrug, like it was nothing special. It hit different because he doesn't get the precision needed to manage slurry density or the current in a tidal cut. Anyone else get that kind of casual dismissal from other trades?

Yeah that "just wet digging" line is a classic. I stopped trying to explain the whole process to people outside the field. Now I just say "maybe, but you try keeping a cut profile that tight with a 3 knot cross current running" and let them think about it. Usually shuts down the casual comments real quick.

Hah, that's the perfect way to handle it. Honestly, my old go-to was to start over-explaining and just watch their eyes glaze over. Ngl, I've probably put more people to sleep than a boring lecture trying to describe sediment layers. Your method is way better, just hit 'em with the real picture and let the mental math do the work.

Man, this is everywhere. People think any skilled job is just the simple part they can see. Like my buddy who said coding is just typing. What's the worst "simple" take you've heard about your work?
