Showerthought: My town still has a law saying you can't walk a horse downtown after 10pm...

A buddy of mine actually got a warning for riding his horse through the main square at 11pm last summer, and the cop cited this old ordinance from 1947. Has anyone else dealt with a law that's just sitting around collecting dust from a hundred years ago?

Haha man that's wild, I love it. My town has a law from 1892 saying you can't tie your horse to a fire hydrant. I found out the hard way when I tied my bike to one while grabbing coffee and this old timer cop actually gave me a lecture about it. Apparently it was meant for actual horses back when they were the main way people got around, but nobody bothered to update it. The cop told me the fine is still $5 which is probably what it was back then too. Makes you wonder how many other stupid laws are just sitting there waiting to get someone.

omg I had something similar happen to me but with a lawnmower lol. My city has this law from the 1920s that says you can't have a running lawnmower after 8pm during summer months. Which is weird cause it's light out till like 9:30 here. I got a warning from a neighbor who was super into local history and told me about it. Apparently it was designed to keep people from annoying the horses that were resting after pulling carriages all day. The fine is still $15 and nobody ever enforces it but it's technically still on the books. Makes me wonder what else is out there that nobody thought to change.

Wait, you guys have laws that still have fines from the 1800s? I read somewhere that in my state theres still a law from 1910 about not spitting on the sidewalk being a $2 fine, but nobody actually follows it or cares. Its weird how these old rules just got forgotten in the system but never officially removed.
