Appreciation post: A vet in Cheyenne told me my quarter crack patches were failing because I was trimming the foot too short before applying.

I started leaving a bit more sole and wall, and the next three held solid. Anyone have a different method for prepping a foot for a patch?

My buddy's farrier in Bozeman swears by a light rasp over the area instead of trimming. He says it leaves a better surface for the glue to grab onto. That method worked for his draft horse with a stubborn crack.

A light rasp on a draft horse's crack sounds like a recipe for disaster.

My old farrier used to say a rasp was just a tool for a different kind of problem. He fixed a quarter horse's quarter crack by rasping it down and letting the hoof grow out from there. It's all about the right fix for the specific hoof.
