Warning: Marking gate hinges with paint can lock them up
I was putting in a backyard fence and used old paint to show where the hinges go. The paint soaked into the wood and made it swell, so the gate wouldn't swing right. Now I just use a carpenter's pencil for any layout marks near joints. It comes off with a rag and keeps things moving smooth.

My buddy spilled red wine on his white couch last month, still sees the faint pink mark. Honestly, it's like what @lucasw57 said, some stains just don't quit. We tried every home remedy, baking soda, club soda, the whole deal. It's a ghost of that party now.
