Saw a guy get fired over a meme he shared from a parody account
I work in property management and a coworker of mine posted a meme from a fake news account back in January. It was one of those obvious joke headlines about landlords evicting people for having too many plants. He thought it was funny and shared it on his personal Facebook. Well, one of our tenants saw it and complained to corporate that he was mocking residents. They called him in for a meeting and let him go the same day. I get that companies want to protect their image, but it was clearly a joke not targeting anyone specific. Has anyone else seen people lose jobs over stuff that was obviously not serious?

...and honestly, what was the tenant's endgame here? Like, did they sit there and think 'this guy is obviously mocking me personally with a fake news headline about plant evictions'? It just feels like some people get way too comfortable using HR as a weapon over stuff that has nothing to do with them. Was there any history of bad blood between that tenant and your coworker before the post, or was this just random? Ngl, I wonder if corporate was already looking for a reason to cut him loose and that meme just made it easy for them.

But is it really "HR as a weapon" or just someone telling on themselves with that post? Ivan called it a stretch, but thinking plants can be evicted says more about the tenant's judgment than the coworker's joke.
