Hot take: Renting tools is way better than buying them for most DIY projects

Last month I rented a concrete saw from Home Depot for $45 instead of dropping $300 on one, and it took me 2 hours to finish my patio job. My buddy who bought his own saw now has it taking up garage space for the last 2 years. Has anyone else saved money by renting instead of buying tools?

Can you really call it "saving money" when your buddy's garage now looks like a mini Home Depot? Sure, @nathan100, that saw might last 20 years, but so will the layer of dust on it after he uses it once. Plus, that $300 could've gone toward a weekend trip or a nice dinner instead of a tool you forget you own. My concrete saw was done in two hours, and now I don't have to stare at it every time I grab my bike. Renting means I only pay for the job, not the clutter. If he's done more than one concrete project in two years, then sure, maybe buying is smarter, but most people just need the tool for a single weekend.

300 dollars for something you use once and forget about, that's like buying a whole new wardrobe for one vacation then never wearing half of it. It's the same logic people use when they buy a gym membership and go twice.

You make a valid point about garage clutter, but I've got to disagree about the savings. That $300 saw will last you 20 years at least, and rental fees add up fast if you do more than one project. In the long run, buying quality tools usually pays for itself if you plan to use them more than once.
