Had to choose between a big bank and a local credit union for my business account
I mean, the bank offered a slick app and a $500 sign-up bonus, but the credit union guy in town said they wouldn't ever freeze an account over a political tweet. I picked the credit union about 6 months ago. It's been solid, no weird holds on my deposits. Has anyone else gone with a smaller place because of their speech policies?

My buddy's bank froze his account after he bought some hunting gear online...

Good call, that's exactly why I went with a local place too.

Wait, is this really that common? I've bought all kinds of stuff online for years, from random hobby gear to electronics, and never had a bank freeze anything. Feels like maybe people are just paranoid or had other issues going on, you know? Like, unless you're buying a literal arsenal or something obviously shady, I doubt most banks care that much. Not saying it never happens, but it seems like a pretty rare edge case that gets blown out of proportion online. Plus, there's usually a lot more to the story than just "I bought a gun and my account got locked.

Feels like people are paranoid" - nah, @dixon.james literally saw it happen to his buddy, it's not that rare.

It's not just speech, they're less likely to flag your account for buying legal stuff banks find "suspicious" too.
