Email threads from clients are a nightmare to keep straight

Missing client replies in email chains was becoming a regular thing. I started logging each message in a simple spreadsheet with key details. Now I know exactly where I stand without sifting through the mess. It's not fancy, but it works.

You can find them by name, but how often do you get those monster threads where replies get buried? I had one client chain that hit like 50 replies deep and I totally missed a question from three weeks prior. My system is basically the same, just a notes column next to their name with the last thing we talked about.

My inbox is basically a digital landfill... I once missed a client's update in a 50-reply thread because I got lost scrolling past my own out-of-office replies.

Read an article about this exact thing. They called it email debt. All those unread messages and old threads create mental clutter. Makes you slower at finding what you need. The system isn't broken, but the way we use it is. We just keep piling on replies instead of starting fresh.

Wait, is it that bad though? I mean, I just search my inbox for the client's name and usually find what I need. Setting up a whole spreadsheet sounds like a lot of work for something that isn't really a crisis. Maybe it's just me, but my email threads aren't that hard to follow.
